Todays CP award goes to this 1998 Ford Taurus. To be fare this is the first car I ever drove (as a rental) that had ABS and it saved my ass on HWY 17 near Santa Cruz CA. Otherwise pretty underwhelming, wallowy suspension, and cheap to the extreme plastic bits for the interior. The 3.0 24 valve motor was about the only redeeming thing it had going for it. At the time 200 HP was huge in a family sedan.

Major CP. Could get about half a dozen decent examples for that price.

Crack pipe. For Taurus’ I believe the original SHO will be the only one worth anything in the future, and that's mostly due to the beautiful Yamaha engine.

CP. A good-condition SHO that hasn’t been rotting in a warehouse for over 17 years can be had for half that. It’s an almost-base Vulcan car so it doesn’t even have 200 hp. More like 145. You’ll have to drain all the fluids and replace almost all the gaskets to get it back to daily-driver condition.

But this car only has 1,466 miles on it and does not come with old person smell.

I don’t remember which car came with the shitty motor and which one came with the 24v motor, I do remember that there was a hell of a difference in performance.

I clicked on the ad and saw the OHV valve covers. The Vulcan wasn’t necessarily shitty but it was low-power and built for long-term durability. Having 3500 lbs of family sedan to haul around didn’t help.

Transmission is a ticking time bomb even when cared for properly. I could imagine a failure before 10k due to sitting so long.

CP, but not a massive CP.

If it was $5,000, I’d say maybe an NP...maybe.

For this price, it would have to be either a 2005 or newer one (by used car market logic), an SHO, or a first gen Taurus in the same condition and with the same mileage, as the original Taurus (unlike this third gen) was revolutionary and highly influential.

Either the angle of lighting is just right or this car had a nose job done without advancing beyond the primer stage.

CP, it MIGHT bring that sort of money if it were a SHO of such mileage...but then it’d be an unreliable SHO timebomb for either the timing system or the transmission.

That has me baffled too, maybe it hit a deer on a test drive or something.

Despite the hate for these when new, I find them relatively inoffensive today. I think I’ve been desensitized by so many other uglier cars these past few years that they look pretty tame by comparison.

I used to call them the jelly bean car, every single design element in the car is oval aka jelly bean.
